What is Osteoarthritis and Innovative Approaches to Total Joint Replacement?
Dr. Graham has extensive specialty training in total joint replacements including secondary or revision joint replacement surgery, personalized solutions and anterior minimally invasive surgical techniques.
What is Osteoarthritis?
The hip joint is formed by articulation of the rounded head of the femur and the cup-like acetabulum of the pelvis. The main cause of hip joint diseases is the wear of the articular cartilage: osteoarthritis. The wear is perceived as pain.
Total Hip Replacement
If you ever wake up in the morning and just don’t feel like getting out of bed because of hip pain, you’re certainly not alone. Total hip replacement surgery substitutes the damaged bone and cartilage of the joint with polyethylene (a plastic material) or ceramic and metallic components. The surgeon can access the hip joint by different paths called “surgical approaches”. Dr. Graham is trained in a true minimally invasive surgery characterized by the preservation of muscles and nerves encountered during surgery to the hip joint capsule and offering a reduced skin incision.
Knee Replacement (Arthroplasty)
The most common cause of joint pain is arthritis that afflicts nearly 20 percent of the US population. If it seems you’ve tried everything and still don’t have relief from your knee pain, it may be time to consider knee replacement surgery. Dr. Graham is trained in a personalized solution to your total knee replacement. It’s important to remember that, like you, your knee is unique. The same solution may not necessarily be right for everyone. Now there are personalized instruments designed specifically for your anatomy. The structure of your knee is analyzed and your personalized guides are created, allowing the surgeon to position and place your new knee implant. Positioning and alignment are crucial to the overall performances of your implant.
As part of our total approach to treatment, River Valley Orthopedics and Sports Medicine provides patients with the highest level of personalized care. Dr. Graham is trained in the latest, minimally invasive techniques such as arthroscopy of the shoulder and knee.
